Public Sharing Networks with Free Riders

چکیده

This paper develops the model of network formation where links are used to share non-excludable public goods. In our model, we consider interactive costs and social perception of free-ride behavior. We first verify the result that public-sharing good network leads to specialization where some individuals contribute and others free ride. Second, our model features two stable pure strategy Nash equilibria where tolerant level for free-ride behavior determines the distance of two equilibria. Third, our model suggests efficient equilibrium lies between two Nash equilibria. Finally, we explore an insider-outsider model in which the cost for forming intra-group links is cheaper as compared to costs for forming links across groups.

Indirect Reciprocity in Contributions to a Peer-to-Peer Music Sharing Network - An Empirical Analysis of Individual Level Data

This study assesses the influence of indirect reciprocity on individual contribution to a peer-topeer network. We find that individuals’ level of contributions increases with number of contributors in the peer-to-peer network but decrease with number of free riders in the networks, indicating that individual contributions are reciprocal in nature. Moreover, we show that individuals have strong ...

'Q-Feed' - An Effective Solution for the Free-riding Problem in Unstructured P2P Networks

This paper presents a solution for reducing the ill effects of free-riders in decentralised unstructured P2P networks. An autonomous replication scheme is proposed to improve the availability and enhance system performance. Q-learning is widely employed in different situations to improve the accuracy in decision making by each peer. Based on the performance of neighbours of a peer, every neighb...

On Analyzing Free-Riding Behavior in BitTorrent Communities

BitTorrent is undoubtedly the most popular P2P file sharing systems in existence that has been able to attract millions of users. BitTorrent depends on global components for file search, engages a moderator system to guarantee the data integrity of file, and uses an exchange mechanism for file sharing in order to discourage users from free-riding. We conduct one of the largest measurement and a...

Free Riding on Gnutella Revisited: The Bell Tolls?

Individuals who use peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing networks such as Gnutella1 face a social dilemma. They must decide whether to contribute to the common good by sharing files or maximize their personal experience by free riding, downloading files while not contributing any to the network. Individuals gain no personal benefits from uploading files (in fact, it's inconvenient), so it's "rationa...

Addressing the Free-Rider Problem in Public Transport Systems

Public transport network constitutes for an indispensable part of a city by providing mobility services to the general masses. To improve ease of access and reduce infrastructural investments, public transport authorities often adopt proof of payment system. Such a system operates by eliminating ticket controls when boarding the vehicle and subjecting the travelers to random ticket checks by af...
